Sometimes it’s really hard to notice the changes happening when you are in the middle of them.

It can feel like you are standing still and the world is passing you by. That others are catching on faster and easier.

Growth often happens in the moments we stop worrying about it. Or maybe that’s just me. 😉

This is one of my favorite things I have painted thus far in our journey together. “Some Enchanted Evening” It’s based on a photo I took one night when I flew in from Africa to surprise my mom for her 70th birthday.

Can you believe that we are entering our 4th week this week? That our project’s hashtag #100daysofwonder2024 has been used over 5000 times? That at the end of our 100-day project, there will be over a million more creative acts of beauty in the world? (Thank you

Jan Scales
for sharing the math on that one!)

It is stunning to me. I am just so grateful for every single one of you.

The Myth of the 21-Day Habit

Did anyone else grow up hearing it takes 21 days to form a habit?

So when I’d get to day 21 and still be struggling, I’d think I was the problem.

That I was defective, or weak, or less than.

Having been born missing my left hip, left leg, and left kidney, and a whole host of other life-threatening medical issues that required 23 major surgeries by the time I was 13, I know what it feels like to be at the back of the crowd. To feel left behind. To be the last one picked for the team. To be on the edges looking in. To have to work 10x as hard.

But, guess what? That 21-day time period is a myth. Scientists have found it actually takes an average of 66 days to cement a habit in place.1

And that time frame depends on what kind of habit it is, how complex the habit is, the makeup of the individual, and so many other factors.

That is to say, having helpful expectations around building new habits and making changes is vital.

I want you to know that you are growing, even when it feels like you’re standing still.

Slow and steady progress is still progress.

You are doing incredible work… Showing up for your creativity.

Caring for your creativity isn’t selfish. It is essential. And I am so proud of you.

Even if it feels like change is a long way away, when you look back you’ll see how much you are growing even in this moment.

But let’s take a moment today and notice what is already changing.

Are you more connected to your creativity? How is that impacting how you feel? It is these small changes that create sustainable progress and beautiful growth.

Fabric and frames came in this week so I got to float frame this little teabag with a gorgeous backer of Liberty fabric from London. I’m off to drink some more tea because, hi. I might need to make these a spring/summer art collection.

Week 4: Weekly Wonder Prompts

Let’s take a moment this week and reflect on what we are learning about our creativity and our creative practice as we enter this week.

What’s one thing you have learned about your creative self and/or your creative practice thus far in our journey?

Let us know in the comments below.
